Description

The Puff Pastry Croque Madame is a modern twist on the classic French sandwich. It layers buttery, flaky puff pastry with savory ham, creamy Gruyère cheese, and is topped with a perfectly baked egg. This dish is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or any special occasion when you want to indulge in a gourmet meal that’s both elegant and simple to prepare.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: fresh chives or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and cut into 4 equal squares.
  2. Layer the Ingredients: Place each square on a lined baking sheet. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on each square, then top with a slice of ham and a generous sprinkle of Gruyère cheese.
  3. Create the Egg Well: Fold the edges of the puff pastry slightly inward to create a border. This will keep the egg in place during baking.
  4. Add the Eggs: Carefully crack one egg onto each puff pastry square, placing it in the center.
  5. Bake: Place the tray in the oven and bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown, and the eggs are cooked to your liking.
  6. Serve: Remove from the oven and season with salt and pepper. Garnish with fresh chives or parsley if desired. Serve warm and enjoy.
